If anyone knows who the Girl Scouts were who volunteered to make the suggestions boxes let us know!
From looking at the surveys, there seems to be a lot of interest in international elements – patterning from house decoration and textiles, integrating words using different languages, like the flags at the opening of the community center. Imagery form nature also rates high.
Some other suggestions that came out of the meeting:
-
Using differing styles depending on weather the mosaic is seen close-up or from farther off, with complex images, words, at eye level.
-
Using irregular shapes, and shapes around doorways.
-
Possibility of using construction adhesive on damp surfaces.
-
Making the bridge more welcoming
-
Dealing with the multiplicity of fences on the front.
As far as sites, there was a lot of interest in the bands that go around the building. There was interest in the “corner” beneath the library, but concern that that area would not always be visible.
There was much discussion when we were chatting informally about the back of the building, and safety issues for kids using that space. We will be looking at look at patterns of use by kids, how can the area be made more pleasing, safer, and less confusing.
We will be trying online surveys to see what people would like to do. We are also looking into a possible blog on the website to keep discussions going (more popular on our survey than Facebook).
There is interest in a trip to Philly to work the weekend with Isaiah Zagar.
Several people mentioned that we neglected to look at Nicki de Saint Phalle! See link below.
We looked at a lot of mosaic, including the buildings of Hundertwasser. See links below. We have been investigating tinting cement or some other way to cover large areas in permanent color, inspired by the Hundertwasser buildings.
